Laying the Foundation: Setting Up for Success
Defining your target market and ideal client profile
Before embarking on your journey to attract clients, defining your target market and identifying your ideal client profile is crucial. Consider factors such as location, demographics, and specific dog-related needs. Are you targeting busy professionals in urban areas or families in suburban neighborhoods? Understanding your target market will allow you to tailor your marketing efforts effectively and connect with the right audience.
Establishing your unique value proposition
In a competitive dog-walking industry, it's essential to differentiate yourself by establishing a unique value proposition. Determine what sets your services apart from others and why potential clients should choose you. It could be specialized training, a deep understanding of dog behavior, or additional services you offer alongside dog walking. Communicating your unique value proposition effectively will help you stand out and attract clients who resonate with your approach.
Setting competitive pricing for your dog walking services
Pricing is a critical aspect of your dog-walking business. Research the market rates in your area to ensure your pricing is competitive and fair. Consider factors such as the duration of walks, additional services provided, and the local cost of living. Striking a balance between competitive pricing and adequate compensation for your time and expertise is crucial for sustainable growth.
Developing a professional and attractive website to showcase services and testimonials
In today's digital age, a professional and attractive website is an invaluable tool for showcasing your dog walking services. Create a visually appealing website that highlights your expertise, the services you offer, and the benefits clients can expect. Include engaging content, high-quality images, and testimonials from satisfied clients. A well-designed website builds credibility and serves as a platform for potential clients to learn more about your business and reach out to you.
By laying a strong foundation, defining your target market, establishing your unique value proposition, setting competitive pricing, and developing a compelling website, you are setting yourself up for success in attracting clients to your dog walking business.
Set up a Dog Walking Website (most recommended)
Getting a dog walking website is one of the best ways to market yourself and grow your income as an entrepreneur in the dog walking space. Even if it’s just a side hustle, it’s worth the time and effort.
There are plenty more reasons why ranking #1 will make you money, like how many clients find their perfect match through our site every single month! If this sounds too good to be true, then let me assure you - it isn't.
There’s nothing better to market your dog-walking business than the following:
Getting a dog walking website.
Ranking #1 for ‘[your city]+ dog walker’
As a quick example, if you are local to San Francisco and are #1 or on the first page of Google, you can sit back and let the leads come to you.
They will either get in touch through your website (most common) or give you a call.
I know if you are new to websites, it can seem a little bit intimidating, but it looks a lot more overwhelming than it is.
You’ve got two options:
1. Ask your local web designer or hire remotely. They are not really the most cost-effective; in fact, they get expensive.
2. Set up your website on a platform like Squarespace. It’s incredibly cost-effective and easy to use with the platforms drag-n-drop templates, newsletter, scheduling, and Google Suit capabilities and add-ons. In total, the monthly cost would cost as little as $100 per month should you wish to use Squarespace for everything:
Squarespace: $16 - $65
Domain Name: $20 - $70*
Google Suite: $20
Newsletter: $20 *
Schdeuling: $16 - $65 per month *
* while Squarespace is great, you can get s domain from sites like Namecheap for a lot less…Find your domain name today.I personally love Flodesk for their beautifully designed templates and they also offer a great discount of 50% off your first year.
I can’t say much about the scheduling service on Squarespace; however, if you are trying to cut cost, I’d recommend using Google Calendars or Calendly which are both free.
Reach out to family and friends
One of the best ways to get dog-walking clients is to start by talking to your friends, family, and neighbors. Ask them if they know anyone who might be interested in hiring a dog walker. If you have dog-owning friends, offer to walk their dogs for free a few times so they can see how responsible and trustworthy you are. Once you've built up a good reputation, word-of-mouth will do the rest, and you'll start getting referrals from happy customers.
You can also email them and use this template:

Put up fliers
Another great way to find dog-walking clients is to put up flyers in your neighborhood or local businesses. Be sure to include your contact information, rates on the flyer, and any special services you offer (e.g., dog sitting, dog training, etc.). You can also hand out flyers to people who are walking their dogs in your neighborhood. They may not be interested in hiring you themselves, but they might know someone who is. Business cards are also with investing because many times, when a potential client sees you walking with your pact; they’ll see your personality and style of dealing with dogs. And, chances are that if they like what they see, you’ll ask if you have a business card.
Dog walking service provider websites
There are also a number of websites and apps that can help you find dog-walking clients. Rover is one of the most popular ones; it's an app that connects dog owners with dog walkers in their area. Once you create a profile on the app, potential clients will be able to see your rates, reviews, and availability and then book a walk with you directly. Other similar websites and apps include Wag! and Barkly Pets.
Online Communities
You can try and promote yourself within Facebook groups within your local community — somewhat transforming your personal page into a business one as well as setting up your official one.
Make sure to read the rules and conditions that the admin of the page has set out and become well-known within them, and occasionally drop the hint that you do offer dog walking services.
I know of some people changing their actual name, e.g., Jane Smith to “Jane “The Dog Walker” Smith, which I think is ingenious.
Explore other ways you can market your local business on Nextdoor, too. As you get more and more comfortable with the platform, you can even start looking into paid ads that will target your ideal customers with scarily accurate detail.
Networking — The Right Way
Finally, don't forget about good old-fashioned networking. Attend local pet events like dog walks, dog meetups, and pet expos. Hand out business cards to anyone who might be interested in hiring a dog walker. The more people you meet, the more likely you are to find clients.
Get to know other dog-based businesses to make yourself known amongst the other dog-related businesses, particularly if they don’t offer dog walking as a service. Think about local dog grooming businesses that perhaps have a physical location or even if they are mobile. You can also think of dog-sitting and boarding businesses, too. Leave your business card. Connect with them on social media. The point is though, is you will return the favor. If one of your clients asks where they can take their dog to get their nails trimmed and generally pampered, you can suggest them.
Networking with other dog walkers can be helpful as well. You can reach out, introduce yourself and offer your services if they need help. If they are overbooked, or something comes up where they can’t make it to a customer and don’t want to let them down, you’ll come to mind when they are thinking about what other dog walkers they can recommend.
But whatever you do, don’t ever swoop/steal a client from another dog walker. It’s nice, and you don’t want to burn bridges within the dog-walking community. Dog walkers talk, and it’s better to be friends than enemies!
Collaborating with pet-related businesses for cross-promotion
Forge partnerships with pet-related businesses such as pet stores, groomers, or veterinarians to establish cross-promotional opportunities. Exchange promotional materials, offer bundled services, or create referral programs to mutually benefit from each other's client bases. By leveraging these partnerships, you can expand your reach and attract clients who may already have a vested interest in pet care.
Advanced Dog Walking Marketing
However, if you want to get more advanced.
Distinguish yourself as a premium brand to attract the RIGHT high-paying customers (and exactly how to do it).
Why you should become specialized, setting a strategic niche that other competing dog walkers aren’t doing, perhaps you offer a single solo dog walk rather than others who do group dog walks — and see why this can dramatically improve your bottom line.
“Be the expert”. How to portray yourself as a real authority in the field of dog walking and not someone who has “just decided” to become a dog walker — and why? Ultimately that’s why you can charge a higher fee.
Learn why you should be turning certain customers away. Develop a character for your business, inject personality, and how this can pay off in dividends (both monetary, stress-wise, and time).
Why it’s actually profitable to take on the “unavailable option”, inject scarcity, increase demand, and ultimately become oversubscribed — in turn, driving up your payments and becoming more flexible than ever.
Harnessing the power of word-of-mouth referrals
Word-of-mouth referrals are a powerful tool for acquiring clients. Encourage satisfied clients to share their positive experiences with friends, family, and colleagues. Consider implementing a referral program that rewards clients for referring new customers. You increase the likelihood of receiving valuable word-of-mouth referrals by delivering exceptional service and building strong relationships with clients.
Reward client loyalty by implementing a loyalty program offering recurring clients perks or discounts. This encourages them to continue using your services and promotes long-term client relationships. Additionally, offer referral incentives to existing clients who refer new clients to your business. This helps expand your client base and strengthens relationships with your existing clients.
So there you have it! These are just a few of the many ways you can attract dog-walking clients in your area. Just remember to be patient, stay positive, and keep putting yourself out there, and you're sure to find plenty of clients in no time.
Good luck, until next time!
